Pet Dental Care 🪥🦷
Did you know that over 70% of cats and 85% of dogs over the age of 3 years show signs of poor oral hygiene? It’s important to look after your pet’s oral health, as it can have a negative impact on other parts of the body. Oral infections can result in pain, tooth loss & can spread to vital organs if left untreated potentially causing organ failure. But don’t worry, there are plenty of things you can do to help improve & prevent oral hygiene from becoming a problem.
Brushing up on the basics 🪥
We must take care of our pet’s oral health so that they can live a longer and happier life. Keeping your pet’s teeth clean is important, as ignoring it can lead to plaque build-up and dental problems. Dental disease is very common in cats and dogs and can be extremely uncomfortable.
Some signs of decay may be; bad breath, excessive drooling, red, inflamed or bleeding gums, build-up of tartar (grey/brown substance on the teeth), reluctancy to eat, pawing or rubbing their face or even behaviour changes such as being less playful.
Timing is key 🔑
It is recommended to start introducing your pet to toothbrushes and dental hygiene products as soon as possible so that they get used to the products. Once your kitten or puppy’s teeth begin to fall out then it is even more important to start using the products as these are the set of teeth they will have for the rest of their lives. Brushing 3 times a week is the minimum recommended time to brush your pet’s teeth to reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar. It is likely that your kitten or pup will enjoy the routine of brushing once they are used to it.
When caring for your pet’s teeth, it can be tempting to reach for the same products you use to look after your own. However, human products should never be used on animals. They can be highly toxic for pets. Instead, always choose dental products that are specifically formulated for your pet.
Cats and Dogs 🐱🐶
A simple pet toothbrush and pet-approved toothpaste is best for cleaning your cat and dog’s teeth. Petplace recommends Coachi’s arm and hammer dental kit. The oil-based formula clings to the teeth for longer, giving a long-lasting clean. There is also a premium silicone finger brush included which acts as a massager, allowing you to deliver an extra gentle brush. Before you start cleaning your pet’s teeth, it’s always best to ask your vet to show you the best way to do this. Flat-faced dogs, like Pugs and Chihuahuas, have poorly aligned jaws, with crowded or absent teeth, and are therefore more likely to suffer from dental disease.
Alternatively, you can use other dental hygiene products on your pet like the TropiClean Enticers Dental Ball by Kong. The ball turns playtime into teeth-cleaning time! The durable KONG ball is specially textured to help scrub away plaque while the gel works to remove bad breath-causing bacteria in the mouth, it’s a brilliant way to keep your pup’s teeth clean if they hate the toothbrush.
Petplace also provide a range of healthy treats to cats and dogs that help to reduce plaque and tartar. Bluepet in particular offers a range of healthy, sustainable treats for your dog made from seaweed. They are a vet-recommended supplement for dogs that contain over 60 essential natural micro-nutrients.
PlaqueOff treats are brilliant for both cats and dogs oral hygiene, helping to reduce bad breath, plaque & tartar. ProDen PlaqueOff works with the animal’s body, dissolving existing tartar and preventing new build-up of dental plaque. Check out petplace’s range of dental chews below.
Rabbits 🐰
Rabbits do not need the same dental care as cats and dogs. Their teeth are known as open-rooted, which means they continue to grow throughout their life. When it comes to caring for your rabbit’s oral health, most problems can be avoided by simply giving them a diet that closely resembles what they’d eat in the wild. Rabbits are constantly chewing in order to keep their teeth trim, so it’s important to keep them occupied with treats and chews. Petplace recommends Johnsons small animal salt and mineral lick as it helps to keep teeth trim whilst providing salt, calcium and essential minerals.
