The Garden Burrow 🐰🪴
During Easter, there can be a lot of myths about rabbit welfare… Owning rabbits is a great blessing but must be done right to ensure the rabbit’s happiness. If you are thinking of getting a pair of outdoor rabbits like Winnie and Nugget, it is recommended that your set up measures a minimum of 3m x 2m by 1m high and is completely predator-proof. Our set-up (@thegardenburrow) consists of a shed connected to a mesh run and a metal playpen (only used when the bunnies are supervised). To ensure my rabbit’s safety, their run is made of strong, durable mesh but is also closed at night as an extra precaution. Additionally, a rabbit set-up should consist of tunnels, hidey houses and different levels to allow them to be active and stimulated. In our shed set-up, we have converted an Ikea Hol into a step and hide for the bunnies. We have also added some tunnels which the bunnies love to run through, sleep in and hide in.
It is extremely important that your rabbits have access to sufficient enrichment to allow them to carry out their natural behaviours. Some of our favourite enrichment items include the Rosewood Naturals range that we can use to stuff with forage and hay. We’ve heard Winnie and Nugget also love the Rosewood Naturals Flower ‘n’ Forage Blossom Gnaw so petplace sent them some goodies. Rabbit enrichment doesn’t need to be complicated and can be as simple as hiding a treat with hay in a cardboard tube!
Owning a rabbit can be quite messy especially if they’re like Nugget! Here are a few tips we have for cleaning:
1. If you are struggling to litter train your bunny, move any accidents over to their litter tray to encourage them to go in there. Neutered rabbits are easier to litter train so this may be something to consider.
2. To clean stubborn stains out of your litter tray, use baking soda and white vinegar letting it stand for 15 minutes. Then scrub and rinse -this should help remove the stains!
3. When adding fresh rugs, blankets or cushions, make sure their scent is on it by gently wiping the scent off a previous blanket onto it. This will help prevent your bunny from weeing on it.
4. Always have a dustpan and brush for the hay and poops!
