Spring Cleaning 🧹🌸
With longer days and warmer weather it’s apparent that Spring has arrived! Your cat might be spending more time sitting on the window sill enjoying the warmth on their fur while your dog is nudging you that they are eager for another walk. This is the perfect time to freshen up your space and get organised.
Bedding 💤
Our pets’ bedding can be a hotspot for bacteria and germs. To properly clean their bedding, make sure to remove any fur before putting blankets and bedding in the washing machine or pop in to petplace to use our rug wash for a much needed clean. The Furminator is recommended for at home use as it removes embedded pet hair from clothing, furniture and fabrics and quickly collects pet hair for easy clean-up.
When doing a spring clean on your pets items it’s best to include your pet too! Give them a good brush with the Furminator Hair collection tool, to shed any unwanted hair before letting your pet go and relax in their newly washed bed.
Some beds may need to be washed on a cold or gentle cycle. A non fragranced, sensitive washing powder is best to avoid respiratory and skin irritation in your pet. It can be helpful, if your pet has sensitive skin, to use an extra rinse cycle.
If your pet spends their days lounging around in their bed and it’s starting to look worn no matter how much you clean it, then you may want to consider replacing it with a new one. Pet beds should ideally be cleaned every couple of weeks. Petplace recommends George Barclay beds as they feature a water-resistant inner liner, orthopedic cushions and are machine washable.
Remember to also clean your pets collars and leads. Your pets will wear their collar most days so it’s important that they get cleaned regularly.
Crate cleaning may be something you do often if your crate gets a lot of use. Wipe the bars down with soapy water and vacuum the bottom of the crate. Then a good soak or scrub with very hot, soapy water, a rinse or wipe off, and drying is all you need. Petplace recommends Milly & Milo Kennel cleaner as it cuts through dirt and grime and is especially effective on animal waste. It neutralizes odors leaving a clean, fresh fragrance.
Bowls 🐾
Cleaning your pet’s food and water dishes should be part of a regular routine. Spring cleaning is a good time to see how they’re holding up. If they have many scratches, particularly if they’re plastic, consider replacing them. Bacteria hides out in scratches and is tough to get rid of. For regular deep cleaning, a good soak and scrub in very hot water and dish soap is usually sufficient.
Toys 🦴
As with your pet’s bed, take a close look at toys and get rid of any that have been chewed or beaten up too much. If pieces are falling off or they’re looking a little worse for the wear, it’s time for a replacement. If the toy is in bad shape, it may be best to throw it out and get a new one. If it is a favorite toy, there are some things you can do to clean it.For some toys, a wipe down with a wet cloth may be enough. Let them dry before you give them back to your dog or cat. You may have soft toys that can be washed. Check the label and follow the instructions. Heavy duty toys like KONG and other thick non-porous toys can easily be thrown in the dishwasher for an extra deep clean.

Small enclosures 🐹
Cleaning small animal enclosures should be part of a regular routine. However, to deep clean a small animal enclosure, start by completely removing and disposing of all paper, mulch, wood shavings, cotton, or other disposable bedding. Using hot, soapy water and a brush or sponge, scrub the entire cage or aquarium and dry completely. Then, line your pet’s cage with brand new bedding. Clean all enclosures, accessories, perches, hides, toys, blankets, and beds with Unique Pet Odor and Stain Eliminator and allow to air dry completely before returning them to their place in your pet’s home.
