National pet ID Week – why should you tag your pets?
Our pets are our family, and we all want to make sure they are safe! Unfortunately, one in every three (30%) pets will go missing in their lifetime, and losing a pet can be a traumatic experience for both pet and owner. Many lost dogs may never be reunited with their families simply because they do not have ID tags or a collar with their name and phone number.
Here are some simple steps you may take to ensure that your pet is returned to you if a neighbour or a shelter finds them.
Dog tags and law
North Wales Live says, “you can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog does not wear an identification tag.”
Dog owners who switch from a collar to a harness while walking their pets may breach the law and face a £5,000 fine. When you’re out in public, your pet is required by law to wear a collar with an identifying tag.
This tag should include your name and address. Failing to have one or having one with incorrect information could result in a hefty fine.
Why should you tag your pets?
Whether you have an “indoor” or “outdoor” pet, it’s always a good idea to have them wear an ID tag.
Life is full of unexpected events, and you never know what will happen. It is best to have your dog ready by wearing their tags. Then, if something does happen, you will have a better chance of getting help.
We wanted to emphasise the unlimited possibilities because having your dog or cat with a pet ID tag is perfect in an emergency. Fortunately, making a personalised tag is easy, quick and inexpensive. Plus, you can also be as creative as you want with your design.

So what should you include on your dog tags?
Now I bet you are thinking – what should I put on my dog tag?
Every dog owner in the UK is required by law to place their house name, number, or postal code on their dog collar. This is useful, especially if you lose your puppy anywhere near home, as your friends and neighbours can help find your pet.
Just remember to update the address if you move to a new home; otherwise, the old address will be useless in the event of an emergency.
Putting your phone or telephone number on your dog ID tag is the fastest way to get informed and contacted if a stranger finds your lost pet, so make sure that the number you provided is up-to-date and reachable!
According to the Dog Control Act of 1992, you do not need to engrave your dog’s name on the ID tag but must provide your family surname. In the event of a lost pet, It will make the whole process easy because the person who finds your missing pet can quickly call you at the number provided on the tag, and it would be easy for them to communicate with you.
It is totally up to you whether you want to include only your surname or full name, as some people do not wish to disclose that much personal information to strangers.
