6 Ways to Protect Your Dog from the Summer Heat
I think it’s safe to say Summer is officially creeping in if it isn’t already here… Long days and glorious sunshine! Perfect for playing outside with your dogs! However, just like us, high temperatures can have an effect on your dog’s health and wellbeing. Too long spent out in the sun, without the proper precautions or care can result in result in a number of health problems including heat stroke and damaged skin. We’ve put together a few tips so that you know how to protect your dog from the summer heat and have the perfect summer!
1. Always Provide Water
This is probably the most important, and the biggest step in protecting your dog from the effects of the summer heat. Always make sure there is plenty of clean, fresh drinking water available for your dog at all times. Dogs don’t have sweat glands on their skin, so need water to help cool themselves down. Providing water for your dog to bathe in can also help with regulating their temperature. We have a great range Dog Bowls and Feeders available, perfect for holding all the water they’ll need!
2. Offer Plenty Of Shade and Shelter
If you have taken your dog out for a walk, or even when you’re at home – try to make sure they have somewhere just to take a break out of the sun for a minute. They’ll appreciate being able to lie down somewhere and cool off, as the heat can take a lot out of their energy. If your dog is in need of a good spot to take a few minutes out, have a look at our range of Dog Beds. Perfect for recovering after tiring play sessions in the sun!
3. Think Before Going For Walkies
We know summer allows for you to take your dog out on some lovely walks, but try to bear in mind the effects of the heat on your dog, especially on warmer, brighter days. A dog’s paws are susceptible to burning or getting skin damage, just like us when we walk on hot surfaces like concrete or asphalt. We’d recommend taking your dog to a field where they can play on the cool grass. It is also a good idea to plan your walks for the mornings or evenings, as it is still quite light out at these times but without the heat. Take a look at our extensive range of Dog Leads and Collars for all your dog walking needs!
4. Leaving Dogs In Cars
I think we’re all aware of how dangerous this is for a dog. Never leave your dog in a car on a hot or even just a warm day. The temperatures inside a parked car can get much higher than outside, therefore leaving your dog at risk of getting heatstroke. We’d recommend leaving your dog at home when you go out or taking them out of the car with you when you do.
5. Don’t Forget About Their Skin
Protecting your dog’s skin is as important as protecting your own. Just like us, dogs can get sunburned and even skin cancer, mostly in places with thin or no fur. There are sunblocks and other products specially designed for dogs. Have a look in our Dog Skin Care section where we have a range of products suited to your dog’s needs.
6. Awareness
Stay aware of your dog’s health and behaviour. It may not become too apparent at first if they are feeling the effects of the heat, but just keep an eye on any changes in behaviour. Especially if they seem to be low in energy, panting a lot, or drinking an excessive amount of water. If you know your dog well enough, then you should be able to tell. If you’re not too sure, always speak to your vet!
