Keeping Your Dog’s Teeth Clean
Keeping your dog’s teeth clean – Taking care of his gnashers not only cuts down on doggy breath, but it also helps to prevent periodontal disease – it can actually help him live a healthier life. It may not be on the top of your list of things to do, but it’s extremely important nevertheless. Below are some tips on keeping those teeth clean.
Brushing
It sounds obvious, but the best way to ensure clean teeth is to brush them regularly – just like us, humans. There is a special finger toothbrush, which is a little sleeve that fits over your finger – ideal for starting out. It is so easy to use and has a textured design for effective scrubbing power. You can also use a dog toothbrush that is more like a human toothbrush in length but is specifically designed for a dog’s mouth. Only use dog toothpaste (which is generally meat flavored), rather than human toothpaste – which can be harmful.
Give the dog a bone.
Dog toys don’t only keep your dog entertained, they also benefit the dog’s teeth and gums. Don’t choose something too hard or too big as it could break his teeth. Nylabone Pro Action Dental Chews are an ideal fit for this, or some rope “flossing” dog toys will keep your dog’s teeth clean.
Watch his diet.
Dry dog food (with hard kibble) is better at keeping plaque off the teeth. If you feed tinned food, try mixing in some dry food. Gradually increase the amount of dry dog food over time.
Give him a treat!
Special dental chews have been tailored to control the buildup of plaque and tartar and make your dog’s dental care a breeze. Be careful, and make sure that you choose dog treats that have been clinically proven to reduce plaque/tartar buildup. An obvious choice is Pedigree’s Dentastix. Remember, you clean your teeth every day – so should your dog!
