How to Dispose of Chicken Poo with Worms!
Chicken poo is regarded as one of the best manures available, it is high in nitrogen, enhances soil health and stops weeds. However… if your chickens have worms, is this poop still good for the compost heap? This is a question we get asked all the time and the answer is…. we don’t really know! Whilst we all know that a healthy chicken’s poo makes great manure we have always been unsure of what to do when you have chicken poo with worms. Obviously contaminated chicken poo should be cleared up and kept away from the other chickens so that it does not mix with any feed etc. It is what we do with the chicken poo after that which causes a problem. Most local authorities will not take poo in their weekly recyclable waste collections and you don’t really want to be throwing the poo in a bin which is likely to not be collected for upto two weeks and get a bit stinky! You could put it on the compost heap with the hope that those pesky little worms are killed off but this is a risk as you can not guarantee they will be killed. Our suggestion is that you burn the poop. This way you are sure the worms are killed off. You can then put the ashes on the compost heap once they are fully cooled. This comes with some caution though. As with any fire, you should always be very careful. You should only use equipment designed to contain a fire. Always make sure that you are making the fire in a safe area away from trees or anything else that would catch fire. Always attend the fire and have something to put it out if it gets out of hand. We would also recommend that you do it away from your open windows as the smell can get a bit much. Also keep in mind that your neighbours may not want the stinky smell of burning chicken poop in their homes either. You should also check that your local area has any restrictions on burning poo. We would say have fun! But lets face it, you are not going to…]]>
