Halloween Blog – Dog Safety
Welcome to our Halloween dog safety blog!
As we gear up for Halloween this year, it’s important to remember our furry friends and their safety. Halloween can be a fun time for both dogs and their hoomans, but it can sometimes be a stressful time for our four-legged companions. From unexpected knocks at the door to people dressed in costumes, it can be confusing for your furry friend. We’ve put together this blog with all our top tips and tricks to make sure your dog has a howling good Halloween, whilst also staying safe. From costumes and treats to toys and activities, we’ve got you covered.
Costumes:
Halloween is a fun time filled with costumes, sweets, and spooky decorations. Many dog owners enjoy getting in the Halloween spirit by dressing up their furry friends in costumes. Dressing your dog up for Halloween can be fun, but it’s important to be aware of the risks involved and take the correct steps to ensure your furry friend’s safety and comfort. Avoid any costumes with small parts or dangling pieces that can be easily chewed or swallowed. Not all dogs enjoy wearing costumes. If your dog seems uncomfortable or anxious in a costume, skip it and opt for some accessories instead.
Decorations:
Keep your decorations out of pet reach: Halloween decorations such as pumpkins, candles, and fake cobwebs can be hazardous to dogs. Avoid decorations that are toxic, such as glow sticks and fake blood, as well as any decorations with small parts that can be chewed or swallowed by your curious canine.
Activities:
Why not try a spooky Halloween photo shoot with props for your four-legged friend or maybe even a trick-or-treat hunt, using our dog puzzle to keep your dog occupied and entertained whilst the kids enjoy their sweet treats.
If you’re considering taking your four-legged friend trick or treating then make sure they’re visible, during these dark evenings, we always recommend using a reflective lead, collar, or coat. Read our previous dog safety blog for more on how to keep your pet safe and visible during these colder, darker seasons.
Halloween Sweets & Treats:
Keep chocolate out of paws reach! Human chocolate is toxic to dogs, the darker the chocolate, the higher the risk but that doesn’t mean your pooch has to miss out on the treats why not make them some dog-friendly ‘Howl-oween’ treats instead? Keeping your dog calm this Halloween:
Provide your pet with a safe space: Halloween can be a chaotic and noisy time, with trick-or-treaters at the door and fireworks going off. Provide your dog with a quiet, safe space, such as a crate or a room with the door closed, where they can relax and feel secure. It’s common for dogs to become anxious and unsettled during these times. You may want to try calming dog toys, like stuffed animals or calming pheromones to help keep your pet calm and relaxed.
Consider distractions for your furry friend, like a puzzle toy stuffed with their favourite treats. Turning on the TV or music can help drown out the sounds from trick-or-treaters at the door or any noises from outside, helping your dog stay relaxed and calm during this Halloween season.
