Back to Work Tips for Pet Owners 💼
There’s no doubt the pets we care for have loved having us spend more time at home over the Christmas period and returning to work after some time off is not always easy. By providing them with fun and engaging activities, we can help ensure they stay happy, healthy and occupied whilst you can focus and prepare on returning to work.
The holidays are a time of joy and celebration with lots of exciting stuff happening. Your pet has no doubt been very excited over this period; seeing family, playing with presents and going for lots of long walks. With returning to work, it’s possible that our pets can become confused and anxious due to the change in routine. petplace have plenty of tips and tricks to keep your dog occupied and entertained whilst they are left alone.
When transitioning back to work our tops tips are to take things slowly and to be prepared. Prepare your bag the night before, make sure to include lunch, stationary, and if you are fortunate enough to take your pet into the workplace, pack their bag the night before (treats, lead, water and blankets). Additionally, don’t hesitate to take some home comforts into the office. This could be items like your favourite mug, a comfy blanket, or even a plant that you can grow.
WORKING FROM HOME.
When working from home, try and clear your workspace from any unnecessary distractions. If possible, try not to work in the same room that you relax in (living room, bedroom etc). This will allow you to have a change of scenery and be able to truly relax in those spaces after work. Remember to also take breaks from the screen and try to actually use those breaks for rest instead of catching up on house work etc. Working from home is a good way to maintain a healthy work-life balance. However, if you have a new or nervous pet who can’t leave your side whilst you are in a meeting or trying to focus, the resources spoken of below could be a great help.
In addition, taking your beloved pet for some fresh air before you start work and on your lunch break is a great way to get some exercise for you and your dog. When taking a break from your screen, go and give your pet some love! Give them a quick cuddle while the kettles boils, take the opportunity to teach them some new tricks. If you have the means, and its safe to do so, you can even let them roam around your garden whilst you work, if you work near a window you can keep an eye on them too.

DOGS IN THE WORKPLACE.
The toys listed below will be a great boredom buster for your pet whilst they keep you company in the workplace. In addition, if you take your dog into the workplace, it is important that they get fresh air as often as possible. Taking your dog for a brisk walk during your lunch break will not only allow them to burn off some built up energy, but also settle them. Another top tip is to prepare your workspace, does your pet have a quiet area to settle? A small corner to curl up in or some blankets on the floor is ideal. Is the area hazard free? Make sure to remove any wires or trips hazard out of the way. Remember to prepare a puppy pack and back up plan.
The top 5 items to pack are; a collar, some water, soft furnishings (a bed or matt for them), some long lasting chews or games that you can find below, and poo bags, but most importantly TREATS!
Lastly, introduce your dog to the workplace through a gradual process. Try one or two days a week first, or even half a day if possible before moving on to a full week. Take note on how your dog seems to be feeling and acting during this time as it will show you how comfortable they are feeling. If they show no signs of stress or anxiety then you can try bringing them into the office full time.
BOREDOM BUSTERS
All pets require mental stimulation but it is estimated that most dogs need at least 6 hours of mental activity a day.
The LickiMat is a brilliant option for this kind of stimulation. The LickiMat is an interactive dog toy that can provide hours of entertainment. These mats are designed to hold treats like peanut butter or yogurt, which your dog can lick and chew on. Not only does this keep them occupied, but it also helps improve their dental health and mental stimulation.

A similar, option to the above is the Kong toy, you can stuff it with any kind of treats your dog enjoys, whether that’s peanut butter, meat or even cheese! The Kong is also freezer suitable which make the activity and enjoyment last longer.
