5 Fantastic Feeds For Wild Birds You Should Know About Have you considered feeding your wild birds these strange foods? Treat your garden birds to something different with these 5 fantastic feeds for wild birds.
1. Mealworms
We sell mealworms in our stores. Mealworms are a healthy source of protein! A great alternative to regular worms if they are scarce or unattainable for your garden Birds. We recommend feeding your wild birds mealworms occasionally in moderate amounts. Mealworms can be bought alive or dried. Live mealworms when stored at the right temperature can be kept fresh for a few months. Dried mealworms can last for longer if sealed in a bag and/or storage without air circulation. We sell dried mealworms in-store and online. Live mealworms are available to buy in stores.
2. Pasta/Rice/Potatoes
You can give your birds plain, cooked pasta and rice or plain boiled potatoes. Pasta, rice, and potatoes are a great source of carbohydrates for birds but are aware that they need a balanced diet. Similar to us, birds cannot survive on a diet of just carbohydrates and water.
3. Apple, Pears, and Soft Fruits
Fruits are a nice treat for garden birds! Don’t add to food waste, you can also give your birds leftover fruit that is overripe or damaged.
4. Eggshells
You can give your birds eggshells to nibble on! Wash those spare eggshells and then bake in the oven at 250 degrees for 20 minutes. Then crush them and place the eggshells outside or in your garden birds’ feeding area. The cleaning and baking ensure that there are no harmful bacteria on the eggshells. The eggshells themselves will give the birds extra minerals especially when it’s needed during the winter season.
5. Cheese & Uncooked, Unsalted Bacon Rind
Cheese that isn’t moldy and uncooked, unsalted bacon rind is a nice meal for your garden birds. Just be aware that artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs so be sure to keep foods that contain them out of reach.
Our 5 fantastic feeds for wild birds are just a few suggestions on interesting foods you can give to your birds to eat. IMPORTANT:
- Remember to keep your bird table, feeder, or bird feeding area clean. Rotting food and mold can make birds ill so be sure to discard any old food and clean the feeding area weekly.
- Keep the feeding area out of reach from dogs, cats, and vermin.
- Be sure to move or rotate the feeding area often to avoid the transmission of diseases, and bacteria spreading and to keep fungus from growing.
- Birds cannot process salt, so avoid giving them any salted foods. If they are given food with too much salt in it they could die.
