What You’ll Need for a New Puppy
If you’re lucky enough to be the owner of a new puppy, you may be wondering, what items will they need so you can give them the correct care?
We’ve put together this handy checklist for just such a question.
Bedding
We recommend using Vet Bed for all dogs, including puppies. They are machine washable (very handy if their are any accidents), quick drying, have a deep pile (for heat retention), double woven backing (harder to chew), and is also non irritant and non-allergic. Be sure to place the bedding in an area away from draughts, with privacy. Having their own private area allows for a little escape for your puppy if they become nervous or scared.
Puppy Food
Firstly you should find out what food the puppy ate with their previous owner, and then gradually introduce a new food over a period of a few days, as not upset their sensitive stomach. Simply mix the two brands starting with mostly the old food, then gradually adding more and more of the new brand and less of the old brand over a few days. For a great value puppy food we’d recommend our own brand Dr Green Puppy Supreme, a gluten-free complete feeding stuff for all puppies (especially working and sporting).
Toys
Puppies are very curious and energetic at their age, so be sure to spend plenty of time strengthening the bond between you and your puppy with play. The classic dog toy is of course the Kong, and they have a special softer version just for young puppy teeth! Other great alternatives include Nylabone Teething Rings or softer toys such as the Flappy Puppy soft toy.
Collar & Lead
Your puppy will have boundless energy, and sometimes playing with toys just isn’t enough, but a good walk will tire them out! Be sure to use a collar and lead to keep hold of them, with a personalised ID tag just in case they get lost.
Treats
Healthy treats are a great way to train puppies effectively, however, don’t feed them too many, other rewards can include a toy or even just a bit of love and fuss! A great treat to use to train your puppy are the Wagg Puppy Treats which can be fed one whole stick at a time for big rewards, or broken up for quick rewards during obedience training.
Toilet Training Pads
Toilet training is very important during your puppy’s development. Never be too harsh on your puppy if they go to the toilet inside, all that is needed is a firm ‘NO!’ and moving them outside to a designated area. While they are still learning Simple Solution Training Pads will really come in handy with cleaning up after them, as it traps in odours and protects your floors.
Grooming Brush
Grooming frequency will depend on the puppy’s breed type and what length of coat they have. However, for all puppies it is best to use a soft brush as not to hurt them. Kong’s Zoom Groom is made from a very soft rubber material that is very gentle on puppy’s skin but also heavily attracts any loose hairs.
Puppy Shampoo
Puppies should be bathed rarely, around a couple times a year as their skin is very sensitive. Animology Puppy Love shampoo is perhaps the best shampoo for your puppy, specifically formulated for your puppy’s delicate skin in order to keep its coat beautifully clean, fragrant and healthy.
Food & Water Bowls
Of course, because what else is your puppy going to eat and drink from? We recommend buying shallow dishes or a twin dish set, one dedicated to food, the other water. When cleaning them with washing up liquid, make sure all of the residue is gone as this can irritate the puppy’s sensitive stomach if ingested.]]>
