Preventing Lawn Burn Caused By Dog Urine
What causes lawn burn?
Lawn burn is caused by the dog’s urine. Their urine is a concentrated nitrogen liquid, and the concentration of the nitrogen is just too much for the lawn to cope with.
What can I do to stop dog pee from killing grass?
1: Dog Rocks
These are rocks that you put in your dog’s water bowl. The rocks are completely safe and don’t add anything to the water – instead they absorb the nitrogen in the water. Absorbing the nitrogen that is naturally in the water into the rocks means there’s less in your dog, and less in their urine.
2: Pee Posts
Not ideal for everybody, but sometimes it may be easier to contain the damage to a less conspicuous area of the garden. You can use pee posts (or training) to encourage your dog to only use a certain area of the garden.
3: Green-ums
These are natural supplements that you give to your dog on a daily basis. The tasty treats have natural plant extracts that bind with the ammonia in the urine and reduces the effects of lawn burn.
4: Dilute the area afterwards
It’s the concentration of the nitrogen/ammonia that is the problem. you can alleviate this by watering this area afterwards If you can keep an eye on your dog and see where it first “goes” and then pour a bucket of water over this area to dilute the urine.
5: Getting your dog to drink more.
The more moisture your dog can take on, the less concentrated their urine will be. Perhaps give them some herbal tea for dogs Ha-Pee Lawns? Specially formulated to help with lawn burn. Or add some Barker’s Brew gravy onto their dry dog food so they take on more moisture.
What about you? What ways do you cope with lawn burn? Or do you just see it as a very small price to pay for the joy of living with your dog? Let us know in the comments.]]>
