Crufts Friends for Life – 2015's Inspiring Dog Stories
Photo credit: onEdition[/caption] Every year at Crufts they present the Eukanuba sponsored Friends for Life Award which recognises extraordinary dog stories that celebrate the strong bond between dogs and their owners in the face of adversity. The nominees are selected based on their loyalty to their owners and for the difference that they have made to their owner’s lives. One of these four nominees will be crowned winner at the main Crufts arena on Sunday 8th March! Katy & Folly [caption id="attachment_2245" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Photo credit: onEdition[/caption] Katy Evans, from Birmingham, was born with cerebral palsy and found herself struggling at university as she was shy and conscious that people couldn’t see past her disability. When paired with Folly, a crossbreed that was trained by the charity Canine Partners, things changed dramatically. Folly helps her with tasks like getting dressed, lifting her wheelchair plates aswell as bringing her happiness and companionship. Julie & Ellie May [caption id="attachment_2247" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Photo credit: onEdition[/caption] Julie Cashell from Powys in South Wales has brought Ellie May into Oaklands care home for people with Dementia since she was a puppy. The Lhaso Apso has brought joy to many residents when they feel alone. Claire & Pal [caption id="attachment_2244" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Photo credit: onEdition[/caption] Claire Pearson from Kent has type 1 diabetes and end-stage renal failure, she would often find herself in diabetic comas on the floor. Her children were her young carers, often coming back from school to find their mother in trouble. Since being united with Pal, a trained medical detection Labrador, her life has changed for the better. Pal can detect when Claire’s blood sugar levels are dropping or rising and alert her so she can live independently. Her children now enjoy greater independence with Pal helping to look after their mum. Amanda, Kyle and Miracle Miracle, a crossbreed, was saved from Thailand and was originally to be slaughtered for his meat. After being photographed strangling himself trying to escape from the his confines he was rescued by Amanda, Kyle’s mother. Kyle is a six year old with cerebral palsy and autism who has since fostered a great bond with Miracle, making him smile even by simply wagging his tail as Kyle cannot talk.
