Avoiding Common Dog Dangers
Road accidents
claim lots of dog’s lives every day and no dog should be allowed around roads on their own. Always have to wear a lead when near roads even if they are very well behaved usually and trustworthy. It is also very important to train your dog to come to you when called, this helps if they are out of reach.
Socialise Your Dog
To help prevent fighting, it is important to properly socialise your dog will all kinds of dogs when young. There are many puppy training courses available across the country to help with this.
Sticks
Although dogs love to chase them, sticks can be very unsafe. Some sticks may have protruding branches or other sharp bits that can cause horrifying injuries to your dog’s mouth. Instead throw a plastic, indestructible object, but it must be large enough not to be swallowed.
Rubber Balls
Always choose rubber balls and toys that are slightly too large for your dog to swallow. This will reduce the chance of your dog inhaling the toy and possibly choking on it.
Chewing
If you catch your dog chewing on something they shouldn’t, don’t react badly by shouting or chasing them, as your dog could see this as a game. Instead, try distracting your dog with a toy or treat.
Escalators
Be sure to carry your dog up any escalators. They don’t understand how they work, and not only are they scary, but your dog may become trapped in the moving parts.
Balconies/Open Windows
Make sure that any openings high above the ground aren’t accessible to your dog.
Algae
If your dog likes swimming, then make sure they avoid water which has algae. Some toxins from the algae can be poisonous or an irritant to them.
Summer
No dog should be left in a car even if the windows are slightly open during the summer, and they can easily get heatstroke. Even playing too much in the sun can be exhausting for some breeds of dog with short noses like boxers and pugs.
