1. The Largest litter of puppies born to a dog was 24!
Born on 29 November 2004 to Tia, a Neopolitan mastiff in Manea, Cambridgeshire, UK. The puppies were delivered by the Caesarian section, one was stillborn and three died in the first week. In total there were 9 females and 15 males.
2. The Largest litter of kittens born to a domestic cat was 19!
These were born on the 7 August 1970 to a Burmese/Siamese in Kingham, Oxfordshire, UK, with the average litter size for this type of cat being 4-6 kittens!
3. An unspayed female dog and her puppies can produce 67,000 more Pups in only 6 years!
A staggering amount that’s been estimated by experts, and this is why it’s so important to spay or neuter your pets!
4. It is extremely rare for a horse to give birth to a healthy pair of twin foals
Equine experts estimate the chance of this happening is around 10,000 to 1.
5. Most French Bulldog pregnancies can only occur via artificial insemination
This is due to selective breeding to acquire the slim hips trait, which means the males can rarely mount and naturally breed with the females.
6. All Golden Hamsters descend from the same single mother
The hamster was discovered in Syria in the 1930s by zoologist Israel Aharoni. Mitochondrial DNA studies done recently have shown that all golden hamsters originate from this same single mother via inbreeding.
7. Female hamsters are known to eat their young if stressed
If the litter is kept with the mother for too long (three weeks or more) they may choose to eat their babies and so it is important to remove them by the time they can feed on their own.
