7 Tips For A Happy Day Out With Your Dog
It’s always a good idea to expose your dog to new sounds, smells, and people as to better accustom them to the world. However, dogs are a big responsibility, and you should always be prepared to serve their needs while out and about, much like you would a child. We’ve put together some tips for making trips out with your dog as easy and stress-free as possible!
1. Walk Them Comfortably
Walking your dog not only provides exercise for both you and your dog but also helps improve the bond you share with them. You should always aim to walk your dog at least once a day. Of course, when walking your dog a good quality lead is essential, but did you know some high tech leads have been developed in recent years.
One of these is the Flexi Vario which are packed full of features. You can easily adjust the handle to fit your hand, detach the standard lead and replace with LED stripped versions, soft braking leads to stop jolting your dog or even duo leads to walk two small dogs at once. You can also attach an LED torch to the side or add a ‘multi box‘ to the underside which holds poop bags or treats.
2. Clean Up After Them
We wish we didn’t have to remind everyone. But cleaning up after your dog is essential, especially when out in busy public areas. It is incredibly easy to be spotted and fined if you decide not to follow the rules. So you should always have a supply of poop bags on hand. To make things a little easier, you can attach poop bags via Simple Solution’s handy little clip-on poop bag dispenser to your lead, so you’re never caught on the spot with no means to clean up after them.
3. Keep Them Refreshed
Dogs can get very thirsty in the sun quite quickly. Also, you can’t always rely on there being dog bowls filled with water wherever you go. There are a few solutions to this problem. The RAC Advanced Travel Food & Water Box allows refreshment on the go and comes with a big water bottle so you can dispense water anywhere for your dog. Another cheaper option is the Pet Stuff Collapsible Dog Travel Bowls which provides a pop-up dish for your dogs to drink from. However without the built-in bottle.
4. Distractions For Stress
When your dog is in a busy environment it may become very stressful for them, especially if they’re young. We recommend that you always bring along your dog’s favourite toy for them to play and distract themselves with. You’ll probably want a toy that can be chewed at great length such as Kong toys.
5. Don’t Lose Them!
It should go without saying that your dog should be properly identified via some tags around their collar in case they dart off and get lost. But what happens if they lose their collar? The only fail-safe way to identify your dog is to microchip them. Microchipping is now compulsory in Wales and will become compulsory in England in 2016. So be sure to visit your local vet or animal shelter to have them chipped.
6. Keeping Comfortable on the Go
It may be a good idea to carry around a small blanket for your dog if they become too tired during some downtime. The RAC Travel Blanket is handy in that it also folds up with a handle for easy carrying. Perfect for if you’re going on a picnic with your four-legged friend.
7. Reward Good Behaviour
Always remember that if your dog is exhibiting good behaviour they should be rewarded. Carry around a few treats in your pocket and feed them a few anytime you feel that they’ve earned it. This will reinforce the good behaviour and help them understand how to act in the future!
Hope you have a Happy Day Out With Your Dog.
