7 Homemade Dog Costumes Ideas – Perfect for Halloween
If you’re one of the lucky dog owners who have a very chilled out pooch, it could be fun to dress them up for Halloween so they don’t feel left out when you all go trick or treating! We’ve scoured the web for some simple, homemade dog costumes that won’t break the bank or require specialised skills. But of course if you’re looking for some dog devil horns like the ones picture, you can make things a little easier, no glue or scissors needed!
Lego Brick Dog Costume

- Elastic, String or Ribbon
- Foam Cups
- Spray Paint
- Super Glue
- Scissors
- Cut the lid flaps off the box so that you have an open box.
- Cut a hole at one end of the box for your dog’s head to easily pop out of. This may take some trial and error to get right, it’s best to start small and make bigger as it is needed.
- Cut the foam cups in half and glue these onto the top of the cardboard box so that they look like the studs of a Lego brick.
- Spray paint the box with the glued on cup studs your favourite bright Lego colour and wait for it to dry.
- Attach two pieces of ribbon/string/elastic either side of the bottom of the box, tie these together underneath your dog’s stomach so the costume stays in place.
Mummy Dog Costume

- Scissors
- Carefully wrap the bandages around your dog, making sure to leave out sensitive areas and leaving enough slack for them to comfortably move. Leave there back area as free as possible from bandages in order or allow them to go to the toilet.
- Use knots to tie together the bandages and keep it all on and secure.
Spider Dog Costume

- Ribbon, String or Elastic
- Scissors
- Attach the ribbon to the spider decoration, and then tie both ends of the ribbon around the underside of your dog to secure the decoration to the top of the dog’s back.
- Pose the legs in a scary manner to create the effect that the dog has multiple legs.
Office Dog Costume

- Old small shirt
- Sewing Kit
- Velcro
- Scissors
- Cut the collar and cuffs off the shirt.
- Measure the collar around the dog, make sure it’s not too tight, you should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and the dog’s neck.
- Attach Velcro to either side of the collar, for easy removal and attaching to the dog’s neck.
- Tie the tie around the dog’s collar, not too tight.
- Make cuffs from the cuffs of the short, cutting down to size as appropriate.
Bat/Angel/Fairy Dog Costume

- Wire Cutters
- Pliers
- Sewing Kit
- Black Felt
- Wire Coat Hanger
- Black Thread
- Cut 4 bat wing shapes out of the felt, 2 of the same for each side.
- Sew the 2 wings that are the same together, leaving a pocket for the wire hanger to slot through. Repeat with the other wing.
- Straighten the wire coat hanger. You’re aiming to bend it into a ‘W’ shape. The wings will slot on the 2 sides of the W and the arch in the middle is where the dog’s back will go.
- Slot the wings onto either end of the coat hanger wire.
- Use the remaining black felt to make a band that attached the wings to your dog’s back via the chest and stomach.
Rider Dog Costume

- Dog Harness
- Brown Felt
- Sewing Kit
- Cut out a saddle shape from the brown felt.
- Attach this to the harness with a sewing kit, to make it look like the saddle is over the dog’s back.
- Sew the doll’s legs and hands to the saddle to give the impression that the doll is riding on the dog’s back.
3 Headed Dog Costume

- Dog Harness
- Sewing Kit
- Scissors
- Cut the heads off of the dog soft toys.
- Sew these onto the dog harness, so they appear either side of your dog’s head.
