How to Build Your Own Nest Box Made Easy
What You’ll Need:
- A weatherproof timber plank (15mm thick, 150mm wide and 1170mm long)
- An electric drill
- Drill hole punch bit
- A saw
- Galvanized nails or screws
- Rubber strip
- Pencil
- Ruler
Building Instructions
- Using a ruler and a pencil, refer to the diagram above and draw the lines onto the plank. Write the name of each piece so that you can refer to them later.
- Saw along the lines carefully so that you then have all the pieces you need to build the nest box.
- Referring to the diagram above and the names of the pieces you should have written on previously, screw or nail the pieces together correctly to build out the structure of the nest box. Leave the lid to one side, we’ll come back to this later.
- Depending on what kind of birds you are looking to attract, make the hole on the nest box front using the boaring drill bit. The hole needs to be high up to prevent any birds inside from accidentally falling out. 25mm for most Tits, 28mm for Great Tits and Tree Sparrows and 32mm for House Sparrows.
- Be sure to drill holes in the base of the nest box to allow drainage when it rains.
- Attach the lid via the rubber strip and nails or screws, so that in the future you can easily open the nest box, inspect it and clean it.
- Nail or screw the completed nest box to a tree or other structure, making sure there is a clear flight path to it.
