Christmas Pet Safety Tips ๐
The most wonderful time of the year is here! Thereโs nothing better than twinkling lights, delicious food, and time spent with loved ones (including the furry, feathered, or scaly ones!). But while weโre decking the halls and munching on mince pies, itโs important to make sure our pets are just as merry and safe. Here are our top tips to keep your pets out of trouble this festive season โ because nobody wants to spend Christmas at the vet! ๐ซ๐
1.ย Deck the Halls Safely ๐
- Secure Your Tree: Make sure your tree is stable. A wobbly tree is just asking for trouble, especially if you have a pet that loves to jump or climb. For rabbits, consider adding a barrier around the tree to stop them nibbling on low branches or wires. ๐ฒ๐โโ๏ธ
- Mind the Baubles: Shiny baubles are tempting to bat around or chew. Opt for shatterproof ones to avoid injuries and a clean up! ๐ ๐
- Tinsel, Ribbon, and Lights: Sparkly tinsel or ribbon can cause blockages if swallowed, and chewing on light cables can be dangerous. Keep these well out of reach.
- Avoid Edible Decorations: Chocolate baubles and candy canes may look lovely, but theyโre a no-go for pets. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, and sugary treats arenโt great for them either.
- Watch Out for Pine Needles: If youโve got a real tree, keep an eye on fallen needles. They can irritate paws and mouths and even cause stomach issues if ingested.
2.ย Festive Food Fails ๐ช
- Chocolate: Itโs no secret that chocolate is dangerous for pets, but itโs worth repeating! Keep those selection boxes and chocolate coins well out of reach. ๐ซโ๏ธ
- Christmas Dinner Leftovers: While a bit of plain turkey might be a lovely treat, steer clear of giving your pet gravy, stuffing, or anything seasoned with onions, garlic, or nutmeg. These can be toxic to pets. Cats may also be tempted to sneak a bite, so keep plates and leftovers covered and out of reach.
- Raisins and Grapes: Found in Christmas pudding, mince pies, and fruitcake, raisins and grapes are highly toxic to dogs. Make sure these festive faves are nowhere near your petโs curious nose.
- Alcohol: Alcohol is toxic to pets. Keep your drinks out of reach and spills cleaned up.

3.ย Beware of Plants ๐บ
Christmas plants like poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe add a festive touch to your home, but they can be harmful to pets if ingested. Opt for faux plants if your pet is a known chewer, or place them well out of reach.
- Poinsettias: These festive red beauties can cause mild irritation if nibbled on, so better safe than sorry.
- Mistletoe and Holly: Both can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in pets, so keep them up high or avoid them altogether. ๐
4.ย Create a Calm Zone ๐ค
With all the hustle and bustle of Christmas, itโs important to give your pet a quiet space to retreat to. Visitors, loud music, and busy schedules can be overwhelming, especially for shy or anxious pets. ๐
Set up a cosy area with their favourite bed, toys, and perhaps some calming scents. Make sure they have access to fresh water and give them space to relax when things get a bit too much.
5.ย Careful with Costumes ๐
Who doesnโt love a festive jumper or a reindeer costume on their pet? But not all pets enjoy being dressed up. ๐ถโค๏ธ
- If your pet is comfortable in clothing, make sure itโs the right size and doesnโt restrict their movement or breathing.
- Avoid costumes with small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed.
- If your pet seems stressed or unhappy, skip the outfit and opt for a festive collar or bandana instead.
6.ย Naughty or Nice List ๐ ๐ป
Your pets deserve to join in the gift-giving fun! But when picking presents, choose safe toys and treats that are appropriate for their size and chewing habits. ๐
- Avoid Small Parts: Toys with detachable pieces can be a choking hazard.
- Choose High-Quality Treats: Pick treats that are designed for pets and steer clear of anything with additives or artificial sweeteners like xylitol, which can be toxic to dogs.
7.ย Winter Walkies โ๏ธ
Donโt forget to adjust your outdoor routines for winter weather. ๐พโ๏ธ
- Watch for Salt and Grit: Road salt can irritate paws and is harmful if licked off, so rinse your petโs paws after walks.
- Stay Visible: With shorter days, grab some reflective gear or collar lights to keep your pet safe on dark walks.
- Wrap Up Warm: Smaller or short-haired pets may need a cosy coat to keep them toasty.
Have a Paw-some Christmas! ๐โจ
We hope these tips help you and your pets enjoy a magical, safe, and stress-free Christmas. Remember, if youโre ever in doubt about whatโs safe for your pet, give your vet a quick ring โ theyโre there to help.
We wish you and your furry friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! ๐โค๏ธ
