What You Need to Know About Walking Your Dog During Winter
We all know walking our dog is vitally important for its health and wellbeing. For half the year, during the spring and summer months, it’s a fun and enjoyable time spent with our four-legged friends. But as the weather gets colder and the nights draw in, it becomes much more difficult to continue walking your dog during winter. This may be because of the challenges this time of year brings, such as the cold weather and the short and darker days. But also general safety, as this time of year can bring a lot of risk. We’d like to provide some advice, and suggest some products to help with this, and get you and your dog ready for the winter!
- Try to keep your dog on a lead during heavy weather such as snow, and during the darker hours such as night time or early morning.
- Keep an extra eye on your dog, even if you believe it’s safe for them to roam freely – especially if it has been snowing heavily. There can be dangerous objects hidden after a heavy snowfall.
- Try to keep them from eating snow. This is due to the fact that there could any number of dangerous substances in the snow, such as antifreeze.
- Be wary of their feet and the ground on which you are walking on. Ice, cold temperatures and salt and grit can be extremely irritating to a dogs paws. They are also prone to slipping on icy surfaces. We suggest wiping down your dog’s paws and legs after a walk, or try introducing boots which will help protect their feet and give them much needed grip on icy ground.
- Consider their natural coat. If your dog has thick or long fur, then they may not need to wear a dog coat. However, for those with less fur, a dog coat is highly recommended.
Here are some products that we are sure will help keep your dog safe when walking your dog during winter.
Dog Coats and Reflective Dog Coats. A coat is probably the first step in preparing your dog for winter. Protecting them from the harsh weather, whilst a reflective coat will give them visibility in darker conditions.
Protective Dog Boots. As mentioned earlier, introducing protective boots to your dog will help with protecting from irritable conditions and substances. The grip on the underside will also help when walking your dog during winter.
Safety Lights. Strapping a safety light to your dog or its collar or coat can increase visibility and give that extra bit of safety when walking at darker periods.
Hopefully we have answered most of your questions and concerns regarding walking your dog during winter with this post. Safe and happy walks to you all!]]>
