Helping Wild Birds In Your Garden This Winter
Winter can be a hard time for our feathered friends, here is a quick guide as to what wild birds you may see in your garden this Winter and what to feed them in order to keep them healthy during the toughest time of the year!
The UK’s favourite wild bird, its bright red breast is a familiar sight throughout the year and especially at Christmas! They are very easy to spot with males and females looking the same. Younger birds do not have red breasts instead they are spotted with golden brown. Robins are very vocal and can be heard all year round. What They Like To Eat:
The Blue Tit is an easy wild bird to spot due to its colourful mix of blue, yellow, white and green plumage making it one of the most attractive and recognisable garden visitors. What They Like To Eat:
Although the males live up to their name by being black in colour, strangely, females do not and are brown, with spots and streaks on their breasts. Male blackbirds are easy to spot with bright orange beaks and eye rings. This is one of the most common birds in the UK, with a beautiful song that is also a favourite. The Great Tit is the largest Tit in the UK as the name may suggest. It has a green and yellow body with a striking glossy black head with white cheeks and a distinctive two-syllable song. It is naturally a woodland bird but has adapted to man-made habitats to become a familiar garden visitor. It can be quite aggressive at a bird table, fighting off smaller tits. In winter it joins with blue tits and others to form roaming flocks which scour gardens and countryside for food. What They Like To Eat:
The chaffinch is the UK’s second commonest breeding bird and is arguably the most colourful of the UK’s finches. Its patterned plumage helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers. It does not feed openly on bird feeders – it prefers to hop about under the bird table or under the hedge. You’ll usually hear chaffinches before you see them, with their loud song and varied calls.
