6 Pets Which are Little Known National Symbols
Although some countries such as Scotland have the Unicorn and Lion as their national animals, which can’t really be kept as pets, some others may surprise you. You may even own a pet right now which you are completely unaware of being a national symbol!
European Rabbit – Monaco
Monaco doesn’t win any points for picking intimidating animals, the adorable European Rabbit (including domesticated rabbit) is just one of their cutesy national symbols, others include the Wood Mouse and European Hedgehog.Pharaoh Hound – Malta
You would think that a dog named after the rulers of ancient Egypt would originate from the same place, but there is no DNA evidence to suggest so, and instead this breed of dog hails from Malta, a fairly close island country.Šarplaninec – Macedonia
This huge, majestic looking dog breed which guards livestock is of undetermined origin but Macedonia have since considered it as their national animal. Definitely one of the more intimidating dogs chosen as a national symbol of their country!Gallic Rooster – France
Unfortunately France has seem to of picked up a reputation of surrendering, and their national animal doesn’t help this stigma either! The symbol is also extensively used elsewhere, Le Coq Sportif, the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Pathé, all of which are French in origin also use the Rooster as their symbol.Coton de Tulear – Madagascar
This adorable dog is named after the city of Tuléar in Madagascar and it’s cotton-like fur coat. It is believed to have originated from the offspring of a Tenerife dog brought to the island and another dog already on the island, producing this unexpected result.Cow – Nepal
In Nepal, cows are considered like the Goddess Laxmi (goddess of wealth and prosperity) and the slaughtering of them is completely banned, they instead roam freely and are sacred. This may have originated from the important milk they produce from which the Nepalese produce dahi (yogurt), ghee, butter, etc.]]>Leave a reply
